Summer 2017 heats up with entertainment opportunities

As the promising summer of 2017 comes to a head, many are wondering how to pack as many memorable experiences into the summer as possible. However, hailing from a small city like Great Falls, it can be difficult to find events to attend and things to do. However, there are endless happenings and a goings-on that are guaranteed to make summer 2017 a blast.

Starting off in the movie theater this June, you can find all sorts of blockbusters at the AMC theater in Market Place in Great Falls. Kicking off the summer, the eagerly-anticipated Pixar’s Cars 3 is scheduled for release on June 16th. The subsequent week, another series continuation of Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 23. Wrapping up the month comes yet another animated franchise, with Despicable Me 3. Moving into July, You can find movies like Spiderman: Homecoming on July 7 and WWII action movie Dunkirk on July 21. As summer comes to a close, other cinema experiences will include the release of Terminator 2 on August 25 and the remake of Stephen King’s classic It, which releases on September 8. Over all, the summer should heat up both weather-wise, and on the big screen.

If you’re more into viewing from the sofa, summer will include many fantastic Netflix releases. June 9th ushers in a definite binge-watching experience as season 5 of “Orange is the New Black,” hits Netflix. After season four’s shocking cliff hanger of a finale, the new season should start off with a bang. For the fans of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” season 13 will hit Netflix on June 17. If you’re less into the idea of a women’s prison or a Seattle hospital and more into fantasy, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” gears up for the release of its shocking final season on June 16. The new season is set to be bigger and better than ever, both in occurrences within the show and storyline, and number and lengths of episodes. Also coming to Netflix will be DreamWorks’ Trolls and Disney’s Moana. New series will also be hitting the streaming network. These will include “Glow,” a new series about 1980’s women’s professional wrestling. For those who are fans of superheroes, Netflix will also be releasing “The Defenders,” which is essentially the Netflix version of Marvel’s Avengers. The series will include Netflix’s superheroes from other shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The series will be released on August 18.

Montana is also getting with the program and joining up into festival culture, with Travelers’ Rest Fest in Missoula on August 12th and 13th, Red Ants pants in White Sulfur Springs July 27-30, and Rockin’ the Rivers in Three Forks August 11-13. Travelers’ Rest will be held at the Big Sky Brewing Co. in Missoula and will feature artists like the Decembrist’s, Sylvan Esso, The Head and The Heart, and Belle and Sebastian. Red Ants Pants’ lineup will feature up and coming artists like the Bellamy Brothers and Asleep at the Wheel. The festival will also incorporate a beard and mustache competition July 29th @ 11:30. Rockin’ the Rivers’ lineup will include Blue Oyster Cult, Hell’s Belles, and Lit.

Lastly, the Montana State Fair will be held at the Expo park between July 28-Aug 5. The Concert lineup includes Shinedown, Old Dominion, Brett Eldredge, and comedian Gabriel Iglesias.

Music releases over the summer include Katy Perry’s “Witness” album and Lady Antebellum’s “Heartbreak,” on June 9th. June 16th releases 2 Chainz new album “Pretty Girls like Trap Music,” Lorde’s “Melodrama,” and Nickelback’s “Feed the Machine.” July usher’s in Lana Del Rey’s eagerly anticipated “Lust for Life” on the 21st, and September 15th welcomes Fall Out Boy’s “MANIA.”

Overall, summer 2017 promises countless possibilities for entertainment and is gearing up to be just as exciting and promising as the hype that has preceded it.
